OpenMediaVault 7: Step-by-Step Docker Deployment with Docker Compose Plugin - Episode 2
Hey there! Welcome to another installment in our OpenMediaVault 7 video series! In this episode, we're diving into the nitty-gritty of Docker deployment using the Docker Compose plugin. If you caught our previous video, we set up OpenMediaVault, configured the dashboard, and even updated the system. Thanks for the amazing response to that, by the way-it's what keeps this series going strong!
Today, our focus is on getting everything ready for Docker. First up, we ensure our drives are recognized in the dashboard and set up a file system, opting for EXT4. Then, we head over to OMV Extras, which is pivotal for installing Docker and Docker Compose seamlessly into OpenMediaVault 7. After a qui...

In this video I dive into solving the overheating and noise issues I've been facing with my HL15 server. My main gripe with the HL15 was how loud the fans were. They're high static pressure fans designed to move a lot of air, but that often comes with a lot of noise. One day, I heard a strange beep from the server, which made me realize something was wrong. Hey David, great video as usual. Your content got me into self-hosting. As I just had to swap out a drive linked by uuid, it may be good to show viewers how to set up symlinks through omv extras as it minimises updates if a drive does fail

    I think if using docker a lot, then using the 'global .env' from within compose plugin, ie tz, puid, pgid, and various paths, just makes docker so much easier.

    • @DBTechYT
      @DBTechYT День назад

      Which would be fine unless you had a docker compose file that you also wanted to have specific credentials in for databases and that sort of thing. I think it would get messy pretty quickly. But, for lots of simple deployments, you could definitely do that :)

    • @try-that
      @try-that День назад

      Both should work together. I also think a global and local '.env' option is in the next release of Dockge (whenever that comes out 🙂) For me it's the best thing about compose plugin, it just makes life easier, I suppose you could use symlinks for the paths, which I use when sshing in to OMV. But as we know, there is rarely just 1 way of doing anything when it comes to PCs.

      thanks for the comment. I've answered the question about upgrading from 6 to 7 a few times already on this video. I don't have 6 installed because of how much I hated it. Also, I don't want to deal with the comments that will 100% happen like, "YOU RUINED MY SERVER BECAUSE OF THIS VIDEO". I've received a LOT of comments from people who can't follow instructions or who think that THEY don't need to run backups of their stuff before taking on a task like that. There are forum posts available out there that have instructions for those who want to do the upgrade.

    Can't wait to see if you do a new video on Docker and Portainer install on RPI if that is in the works. Just bought the chair and used your code. Hi from Denver.

      I'm having mixed feelings about doing raspberry pi videos these days as the company has apparently done something to upset people and I get a lot of mixed comments when I bring up the idea of more pi content. Also, I'm in The Springs! Yay Colorado!

    Been using since 5. I think 7 is the best version so far. I think you will find the docker changes weird at first, but I don't even have portainer added. The compose plugin does everything you need and more, I especially like the global env settings, you can also setup backups, it's a lot different to the last time you did a video on it. There's also a kvm plugin and recently a k3s plugin. For me as I use JBOD and prefer docker compose I was very disappointed with Scale, it will be interesting to see how it develops and hopefully less breaking upgrades.

    Will you be showing how to migrate existing data shares from 6 to 7 as well?

      I won't be doing anything regarding OMV6 as I don't have it setup. I hated it so much that I quit using OMV entirely

    A very good, comprehensive start to the guide. Though the audio during the Basic VM Setup might need to be massaged, it sounds like something is beeping in the background and causing a lot of noise through that section of the video.

      It was 85 degrees in my studio and I had the door into the back yard open to make it bearable while i recorded. There was something going on at the facility behind me. I literally talked about this in the video.

    Always good to see OMV improvements that make a good QOL (Quality of Life) improvement. That dashboard issue used to drive me bonkers on a cleared cache or a new browser or a different machine!

    Very good video!! While you are at it and when you get to smb shares from OMV you might want to check out how to access the smb shares from Win 11 24H2 as there sre some extra requirements, something about not accepting guest and requiring sign in or something like that. Thanks!

    Hi David, loved the video and looking forward to the second one. I do have one question. I run both a Raspberry Pi using Raspbian a NAS and TrueNAS Scale. What's interesting is that the Pi doesn't constantly spin the hdds. Truenas has them constantly going. Can you tell me if OMV is going to be like the Pi or Truenas? Many thanks.

      Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, because I'm virtualizing this, I likely won't get "real" results with something like what you're asking, so I'm not 100% sure.
